The Carthage Music Club met Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. in the Murphy Payne Community Room of the M. P. Baker Library on the campus of Panola College. President Jacinda Gwinn opened the evening by welcoming members and introduced guest Carol McCubbin, a friend of Lucille Collins.
Sarah Baker, choral director, and Becky Gullette, accompanist, lead members in singing, “The Star Spangled Banner” while Marcia McKillop lead recitation of the National Federation Music Clubs’ Collect. The monthly poem, “Speak Gently” by David Bates was read by Lucille Collins.
The background of the monthly song, “A Beautiful Life,” by William M. Golden was presented by President Gwinn followed by the club singing it together lead by Baker and Gullette.
Program leader Chris Collins presented a lecture, “The Everywhere Symphony: Chords, Modes, and Emotive Codes,” where he used powerpoint slides and audio visual media on an electronic white board with a printed handout given to the group. Chris spent many hours researching and compiling his presentation and shared that while music is analytical it is also an art form. Through musical examples such as popular songs, cinematic scores, Broadway tunes and more, he showed how composers have used various scales, modes and designed chord progressions to evoke an emotional response from the listener.
Following the program, President Gwinn led a brief business meeting. Secretary Kristy Cawthon read minutes of the September meeting, while Treasurer David Yarbrough handed out his report. Kristy gave an update on the Panola County Children’s Honor Choir, stating rehearsals are going well.
