Take a look through the list below at a variety of activities throughout Flint and Genesee County from Thursday, April 13 to Saturday, April 15.The St. John Street Historical Committee, UM-Flint Community Design Studio, and Environmental Transformation Movement of Flint invite residents to a block party from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at the newly renamed St. John Street Neighborhood Memorial Park.
The park is located at 3500 W. Boulevard Drive, along the Flint River near the intersection of West Boulevard Drive and Massachusetts Avenue.
The St. John Street neighborhood was a vibrant, diverse community of approximately 3,000 families which were displaced 50 years ago by highway, industrial and commercial development.
Bounded by Michigan Avenue to the west, St. John Street to the east, Keenley Avenue to the north and Hamilton Street to the south, the neighborhood had a host of Black-and immigrant-owned businesses and was a cultural center for African-Americans in Flint.
In the early 1900s, immigrants from many countries called St. John Street home.
Those interested can come out to the block party to see design ideas for historical displays and how the plans for building a memorial in the park will capture the rich memories of people who grew up in the St. John community.
The block party will include music and conversation with artist Ash Arder’s solar-powered sound sculpture, Whoop House.
Members of the historical committee will share stories of the St. John Street Neighborhood that was demolished in the 1970s under the guise of urban renewal.
