Growing old is a part of life, and it is also a part of being a television series. Unfortunately, that is the case for the long-running animated series Big Mouth, which is ending along with its spinoff Human Resources.
On April 24, Netflix renewed their hit comedy Big Mouth for its eighth season. They also revealed that this would be the final season. This news comes ahead of the seventh season, which will debut at an undisclosed date this fall. The last season will premiere sometime in 2024. This eighth season will also make Big Mouth the longest-running scripted Netflix series outside of Kids and Family programming. It will beat out Grace and Frankie, which ended its seven-season run in 2022. Big Mouth will leave a notable mark in Netflix’s history.
Series co-creator and star Nick Kroll had a humorous statement about his series coming to an end. He commented, “If you would have told adolescent Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg that middle school would take eight years to finish, they would have been like, ‘Yeah, that sounds about right. This seems like it will never end.’”
It is a bittersweet moment for Netflix. Billy Wee, Netflix’s Director of Adult Animation, remarked, “Big Mouth is a towering achievement in animated comedy that will make Netflix history for its longevity. We are thrilled that we still have two more hilarious seasons to share with fans before this brilliant coming of age story reaches its conclusion.”
Starring Kroll and John Mulaney, Big Mouth displays the ups and downs of being a kid through school and puberty. The series centers around seventh graders and best friends Nick (Kroll) and Andrew (Mulaney). The two boys are getting older, which also means dealing with their confusing bodies and new feelings. Their guides are their hormone monsters, Maurice (also Kroll) and Connie (Maya Rudolph). Their struggling friends include Jessi (Jessi Klein), Jay (Jason Mantzoukas), Missy (Jenny Slate/Ayo Edibri), Matthew (Andrew Rannells), and more. Growing up can be difficult, but it helps to have some great friends around.
While the ending of Big Mouth is notable, it is not the only series in this universe coming to an end. The spinoff Human Resources will also be ending soon. At the same time as the announcement about Big Mouth, there was an announcement that Human Resources’ upcoming second season would be it’s last. While the two series are separate, the ending of Big Mouth will see appearances from Human Resources’ exclusive characters.
